My major research project focuses on the themes of play and urban development by studying a non-governmentally operated learning and recreational centre in Machar Colony called Khel. I have researched how spaces for play are integral to early childhood development and are required to ensure that children are provided with the rights they deserve through the spaces that they have access to, especially in lower-income settlements. With regards to the Anti-Encroachment Drive, there is a large-scale removal of multi-class, multi-gender public spaces in the megacity of Karachi and most public spaces are catering to the city’s elite class. The majority of the city’s population has few to no spaces for recreational purposes. When children are not allowed space to grow and play, they may fall into anti-activities such as drug abuse, gambling, and crime. I have used Khel Recreational Centre as a direct case study to how important it is for children to have such safe-spaces and how they are possible at a community-level and centred around the children’s need for play and also society’s requirement for learning.
